Poetry / Re: Favorite poets and poems
« on: June 15, 2017, 02:07:06 PM »
Apologies for necro'ing this thread, but I was recently asked what my favorite poem is. I did some digging for half remembered stanzas from years ago that still make me smile upon reading them, and realized that most have a religious undertone (or are blatantly so, as is the case for "Faith vs Doubt", "The Little Cat Angel", and "The Hippopotamus"). It occurred to me how much our favorite poems growing up can be a reflection of the sort of life we might have had (I spent my first few years of school in Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School. Though that was where my love of poetry began.).

I know this is perhaps a "duh" thing, but I never really reflected much on it before.

Hi guys, it's that time again!  Now that there's not much left for me to do on Volume 2, we're open for submissions for Volume 3!  There have been a few changes made for the process, so please be sure to check the guidelines so that you'll have all your ducks in a row.  You can always refer to or look in on Twitter @civbeastspoetry for any updates on either volume.  But now, to the Guidelines!

Theme: Animals
Sub-theme: Outside observation of animals, in the mind of animals, symbolism of animals*

Submit To:
Size 12 Calibri font .txt .doc or .docx  If it’s concrete poem or otherwise requires a very specific format, please send as a PDF.  Please send all poems individually (one email per poem).
Please Include:  The name of the poem in the Subject Line, preferred pen name, and mailing address (for your copy of the volume.).  If you are doing anything purposefully different in spelling, punctuation, format, etc for artistic reasons, please be sure to list them in the body of the email.  Also include your biography, either in the form of a limerick, haiku, four line stanza, or under 100 words.
Deadline: November 1st, 2017.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us.  Thank you, and good luck!

*The last allows for works about totem animals, spirit animals, the longing for the personification of an animal, etc.

**We will be hyper-critical of longer poems since we only have so much room to work with.  They will be read and considered though.

I wanted to note one last thing.  It has been brought to my attention that the majority of the poems we accept aren't about anthropomorphic creatures.  When I initially started these collections, I had no idea how many poets outside of the community would be interested in this.  We still put as much consideration into anthro-based poems as any other though, and are happy to review any submitted on the subject.  Thank you.

It's been way too long since I've updated this, and I apologize.  Yet another perfect storm of things were happening for Weasel and myself (unrelated but sadly at about the same time), but CB 2 is in its final stages.  The proofs have been edited and sent to Weasel.  I need to finish collecting some information, but otherwise once those edits are made it should be set for publishing.  Next update on here should be announcing where to find it.

Everyone involved has been astoundingly patient- thank you so much.  I'm reaching out to an individual who has come highly recommended to me for help on Volume 3.  I really don't want to make you guys wait this long for any future volumes.

Anyway, I hope everyone is having a lovely day.  Be safe!

Miscellany / Coming out as a Furry

A friend of mine recently came out of the fuzzy closet to his gf. She's trying hard to understand, but all she knows is the stereotypes and doesn't get how a community of "talking animals" can help a person name friends and find themselves. I remember seeing a few videos that explained it far better than I ever could, but beyond Culturally F'ed, I cannot for the life of me remember what they were.

Anyone have some good suggestions? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I've been stuck at the desk for the past couple of days while at work.  No idea how much longer this will go on, but it seems like as good of a time as any to start this project since things have been crazy this year.

It's been a bit since I have updated this and you have my apologies!

The second installment of Civilized Beasts is looking amazing!  We had a great number of familiar names return for this next installment, and plenty of fresh new names as well!  I need to take some time to get everything together to send to the publisher, and it looks like it should be coming out by February 17th.  We're also working with Darkomi, the same cover artist from last year, and it looks like the marble fox from last year's cover will become our unofficial mascot.  I've already had a look at the line art, and I think you guys are really going to enjoy it!  I've also contacted Hiccupby, who had donated that amazing line art that we used for last year's cover page, and we'll be getting a new cover page from her!

Also, due to a few requests, I've made a Twitter account specifically for Civilized Beasts where you can get all the latest updates, submission dates, publishing dates, and places to purchase the earlier collection (someday, collectionS!).  I'm still getting some information up on it, but feel free to follow it sooner rather than later.  I'm also intending to make an FB page for information that might take more than 140 characters, though I'll be linking those in the Twitter account.  I'll be sure to include the address here when I get it.  I'll still be posting the calls for submissions and general updates on here, of course, but these might be easier to spot for those who get notifications and such.

I think that's everything for now.  Happy Holidays everyone!

I know I've already asked this for a previous submission call, but I'm blanking atm x.x What would you consider some good examples of the sort of punk lit feel you're looking for?  Some good inspiration, if you will?

That sounds like a lovely intro, and quite an intriguing book!  Thank you for bringing it to our attention.  I think I'll add it to my wish list for this Christmas.

Really glad to hear he got his copy!  I hope you both enjoy it <3

I really need to take part in this >.< So for Furry Booktober, I pledge to read and review two books.  My furry shelf in my bookcase is growing, so it's about time I actually take advantage of it!

Well you just piqued this kitty's personality, but I won't press X3 Let me try to get a few things to a steadier point and then I'll see what my subconscious is willing to bring forth.

I'm half tempted to use Wrath as an outlet piece >.> No idea if I could muster an actual decent plot for it with how much I'm currently juggling, though.

My original idea for this kind of fell apart in the details >.< I don't want to give up yet, though, so I'm going to try toying around with different ideas but same country/animal.

Hey guys, great news!  We decided to extend the deadline for this through October 15th.  You can also submit however many poems you would like!  So if the muse strikes before then, please be sure to send us any poetry you feel might suit the theme.  All information is in the original post.  Special thanks to all who have submitted so far <3
